What is the difference between Architecture and Urban Design?

Can you study Urban Design at a University? And I also would like to know if there is any website that will give an outline of a building firm (for study references) including everything, from the Executive to the Construction Department. Thank you for any help :)

What is the difference between Architecture and Urban Design?
There is a big difference between both. In urban design one is dealing mostly with public spaces such as streets, parks etc. Urban design is concern about the design of cities and how they will function when people are inhabiting them.

Architecture focus on the design of buildings. Of course, when designing a building we need to look at the overall context of the place -- the site, the structures surrounding, etc. -- but the major preoccupation is with the building itself.

Most of the architecture schools will have an urban design program available. Take a look at these sites:

http://www.dexigner.com/directory/cat/Ur...

http://aia.org/ed_arched

The structure of a building firm sometimes can vary greatly. Take a look at the website for the American Institute for Architects for clarification.

What is required to start your own interior design business?

I am in New York. Do I need an interior design license from New York State? What is needed? Even if you aren't from New York, what are the requirements for your state? Are there any requirements at all? Do I need to just register for a sole propiertorship?

What is required to start your own interior design business?
Best to take a course in interior design. I do not know the laws in New York, but you also will need a lot of money or at least a substantial loan, and I also wish you great success.
Reply:from what i have seen from the shows on hgtv, you have to be gay, totally tasteless and a little color blind...lol
Reply:Before you spend a lot of cash to get a degree or open a business. You might want to check out this web page. It's possible to share your expertise and make money without going into debt. It also has some soul searching questions for you to answer to see if this is what you really want to do. I've owned 4 businesses and wished I would have come across this site a long time ago. Good luck!
Reply:Regulations dictate that only those who have met or exceeded a certain level of accredited education and, in some states, passed the qualifying exam administered by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification can use the title of Interior Designer. In 18 states, they must be licensed before they can be called an Interior Designer.
Reply:I think it would be best to get a degree in interior design, just to cover yourself. Designers have an "ASID" after their names if they've completed a four-year degree in design. If you just want to dabble, or learn as you go, or even if you have a great style sense, try focusing on one aspect of design--like, paint, or furniture--and concentrate on that. Then, you could market yourself as a paint specialist or furniture consultant rather than a designer. For tax purposes, you could start as a sole prop and file a Schedule C.

How do I find contests for Art and design?

I'm looking to find some contests. I need to make money to finish school. I am an Architect and Graphic Design major with a minor in Math. I am currently in my 3rd year of college and I need money to pay for supplies and school fees. Any suggestions?

How do I find contests for Art and design?
start by looking under contests for art and design in your local art and design contest publications, if that dosent work try something else until something works, dont be a part of the preblem...be a part of the solution.
Reply:God bless the internet and search engines!!! pick a search engine and type in what you're looking for... the more specific, the better... best of luck!
Reply:Go to fastweb.com and fill out their extensive scholarship survey about yourself. They will then send you specific scholarship opportunities. Essays and art/design contests are included. I know that there is one for RedVines that has the potential of $5000 if you win the grand prize. For that one you go to RedVines.com But, the important thing is to get registered with fastweb, so that you continue to hear about other contests for young adults.
Reply:Online is a good resource. Craigslist.com allows people to put up postings.

Also, community colleges often hold contests. Look at community bulletin boards.

What is a good design or idea for a yearbook cover?

I am currently trying to make a digital yearbook cover and I need suggestions to design and make it. What should I put in the cover except The titles and the year? I dont have any access to some of the photos being put in. Thanks for any GOOD suggestions.

What is a good design or idea for a yearbook cover?
well for my highschool yearbook the one year i suggested we take pictures of signs from around where we live that have meaning to people..like stores, restaurants, street names, etc. it turned out pretty cool and we all liked it.
Reply:use the school mascott and its prints all over it
Reply:the school mascot holding up a banner with the year and the name somewhere on it and mabye pics of the school if full color printed, but if it's like the old time year books my mom has and it's hard and all(i can't remember my ones from last year, i din't buy one) the maybe just the mascot and the year and in the school colors. hopefully u have decent colors. i like my school's we're red and black! yay! lol.
Reply:maybe you could do some sort of collage, because a lot of yearbooks have pictures of the students standing around or something. You could have headshots of students, quotes, patterns, anything that looks cool. And you can make it really colourful with the title maybe curled around some of the pictures. Be creative and good luck!

Does anyone know how to start an interior design business?

Here's the details. Everyone that see's my home raves about my decorating and tells me I should be a designer. Thats fine and sounds very interesting to me, but I have no formal education in interior design. There is not a single college that offers these types of programs in my area and my husband is military, so I cannot move to attend college. I was wondering if it's possible to start a decorating service that just advices clients and helps them with their redecoration. Rather than completely doing the job for them and charging them some sort of insane fee. I want to give people ideas and then help them do that. Like painting etc. And make it very affordable also. Would anyone have any advice on how I should go about this?

Does anyone know how to start an interior design business?
First of all, DON'T call it an interior DESIGN business, because you WILL need a degree, and possibly a license, for this. A DECORATING business should be easy enough to start without a degree-as long as you are just advising on paint colors, accessories, maybe some drapes etc. You'll get some flack from designers in the area but they'll get over it (designers can be snobs because they did go to school for a long time and have spent a lot of time and money on their degree).

Get some books on starting your own business and go for it! The hardest part will be finding your clients.

Good luck!
Reply:1st do you have a degree? if so then go to the SBA(small business administration and they have booklets that will help you get started. there also are books at the libaray that can give you a format for abusiness plan. you will need a business plan to get a loan or grants. Check out grants if you have a degree, they don't have to be paid back. I found this book very helpful but every state has different statues and laws so thos to will need to be checked out. BizPlanBuilder by JIAN Tools For Sale, INC this book comes with a disk for the forms and is very easy read. If you are not degreed then that is where you start and get a part time job as an apprentice with a local company and learn everything you see and here.

Does a fashion designer design their own shoes for their dresses on the catwalk?

I wonder that when they design a pretty dress or something like that. Do they have to design their own shoes or they buy them from some stores?

Does a fashion designer design their own shoes for their dresses on the catwalk?
The big fashion labels design their own shoes.
Reply:Every Fashion designers need to promote their own brand

and catwalk was the best solution. They were not to buy shoes

from other brands specially the biggest brands like Versace

'cause if they were to wear another brands during the catwalk

it means they also promotes the other brands and it means they

accept losing... During business you need to compete with other brands.
Reply:Not necessarily, but some big labels like Gucci, Ralph Lauren and Louis Vuitton do.
Reply:I think a lot of them do design their own. Other designers may go to like vintage thrift stores or little boutiques. They risk making the other designers mad, anyway. Like, Chanel sued Moschino Cheap and Chic for spritzing their perfume on a shirt.

Who do I report to regarding a serious design flaw in a sainsbury's custard slice packaging ?

I slid the tray out, the 2 hollows in the plastic tray immediately folded, as they are very inclined to do so, resulting in my slices cascading over my fairly unclean floor. Not that this puts me off eating them.

Its a design nightmare, and the 5th time I've had this accident.

How much does it cost to copyright a design you have created?

We have come up with an idea for a business and we would like to know what the cost is to copyright a design.

How much does it cost to copyright a design you have created?
You are speaking of two different things. You cannot copyright a "design" such as a brochure design. SOmeone can't steal your artwork, that has an inherent copyright, but someone can take the actual design and make it their own (colors, layout, and similar artwork)....an idea for a business cannot be copyrighted either, a product/invention can be patented, a business name can be trademarked/registered, but the idea really can't be made your own, sad but true...contact a copyright lawyer, sometimes law schools have free advice services....

What is the role of Chemistry in the design of pesticides combining max efficiency with min enviro damage?
Pesticides are any of a variety of compounds toxic to insects to protect crops. The roll of chemistry on the design of pestidcides is to ensure that only the insect is killed and there is the minimum amount of 'collateral damage' of other animals and plants. This can be done by altering the chemical structure of the compound to make it specific to insects or to ensure that it doesn't travel up the food chain to larger animals and ultimately, us.

Any good art or design schools in England or the Netherlands?

For various reasons, including just wanting to experience life in some other part of the world, I've been having a burning desire to move to Europe. I've narrowed down on England or The Netherlands as possible locations.

So I'm wondering what would be a good art or design school from these places? Particularly any that work with digital media or art direction, and any that are ideal for foreign students.

If it helps any, I'm currently a junior digital media student at UCF in Orlando, Florida, USA. My career goal is to design for film, television, videogames and the like.

If you want random photos then I'd recommend going to http://tinypic.com and just browsing through pictures there... They're as random as you get... just about.

Then again... you might want to toy around with some programs like Apophysis (google it) to see what it produces, and you might be inspired to do something with one of the images it comes up with.

What kind of capital is required to design a new hard drive?

I am wondering what is the capital investment a hard drive manufacturing company has when they decide to design a new hard drive? I know this could be really hard to predict or nail down because there is so many variables but any type of number would be nice. Is it a new line of hard drives, just a minor variation of another one. A complete redesign? Just anyone fact about what it costs in this feild would be interesting to know.

What kind of capital is required to design a new hard drive?
it is always re-design, why inventing a wheel. It takes years to come up with one. just like would you start a car from scratch or you will modify it.

There is always R%26amp;D department in those big company who tries to improve the hard drive and conference to share technology. Capital investment will be in the millions to design one phase.

What are the consequences of changing the design of my registered trademark?

I have a my company logo registered as a trademark in several countries. In some countries it is still pending.

If I wanted to change the logo design, what are the consequences for my trademark filing?

Some people have said that it will restart the process, so registered trademarks will again be pending. And trademarks that were pending will be reset, so it's like filing a new application. Can anyone give a clear answer on this?

What are the consequences of changing the design of my registered trademark?
You will be well advised to restart the paperwork, along with the repayment of fees, for registering your trademark. Of course, you will have to resubmit the necessary samples of your trademark.
Reply:Your not changing it, your creating a new one, and its back to square one....
Reply:You have begun the copyright process for a specific design. If you change it (even slightly), it is no longer the original design.

You can continue the process for the original design if you wish, but the new one is a new one.

How can I start my own Residential design business straight out of college?

I'm in college for architectural drafting and I would like to start my own residential design business, as soon as I can. any tips on how I can start it off without having plotters and a blueprint machine. I got the table the tools the paper the brains but I just can't afford a $5000 worth of machines not counting the $3500 programs I need to start off with the computers. Any tips.

How can I start my own Residential design business straight out of college?
Let your first client pay for it. Really, a lot of big companies do not invest in R%26amp;D until they have that first contract. The challenge, is gettign a first client who will pay 50% up-front. When I started my business, I published some articles in trade magazines--that gave me some instant credibility and made my business look bigger than it really was. I found trade magazines eager for submissions.

How do I go about painting a design on my crappy old car?

My car is going to die before I ever sell it, and I'm an art student, so I figured it would be fun to stencil a design on my hood. I'm not going to paint the whole car, just a small portion. Could I use spray paint meant for metal you get at home depot? Or would that instantly peel and chip? I know this has to be possible.

How do I go about painting a design on my crappy old car?
Yes you can use it. If the hood is already painted you want to sand it down a bit then get yourself some automotive spray paint - its made for cars and would be a bit better for going on top of the paint. I understand it may be hard to sand down only what you want to stencil, so if you dont want to sand it, just clean it really well.

But if you're painting it onto bare metal, its fine. Go for it and have some fun! The first time i stencilled a car i did a jolly roger, right over the paint without even washing it. it never came off, but i was sure a fool for not covering the windshield! The wind blew the spray paint onto the windshield and kinda made a mess. So if you can, do it inside.
Reply:You can spray paint it, make sure its clean and dry first.

Try cleaning it with rubbing alcohol, ( since its a crappy car)

Most people use an air brush, but isnt that just a glorified can of spray paint....

They also make spray paint for appliances . But you probably cant get as many colors.

Have fun
Reply:you can use automotive spray paint made by Krylon or

as long as you scratch the surface using 150 grit sandpaper or a 3m scrub pad and then prime the area using automotive primer also a krylon product, you can paint with any paint as long as you clear coat with an oil base clear coat....this should last a while but of course not forever.

How can I start a clothing line without getting a degree in fashion design first?

I want to start up my own clothing line, and I have over 200 designs already, but design schools are expensive. I want to also get a degree in business because I want to own my own night club, so I won't have time to go to school for fashion design, business, and have a job to pay for school.

How can I start a clothing line without getting a degree in fashion design first?
Go to school for business and start a boutique (online or store or both) on which you sell your designs. Also hook up with local photographers, they may be interested in using your clothing in upcoming shoots. You are gonna really have to work and dont give up. Do you have local television shows that do special segments on upcoming work? Inquire about someone maybe wearing something of yours on air. Know someone who produces zines? Great get them to put you in their zine. The key is exposure. Wear your own designs as often as possible. Join up with already established indie websites that will link and advertise you for free. Go to local crafters shows. Advertise. Make business cards. The more exposure you get, then the more people will see what you have and interest will grow and before you know it you will be going, so I leave you with this..NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK!

What is a good proven successful method to advertise my design services?

I have a landscape design service and it seems that my advertising dollars were flushed down the toilet in the yellow phone book. I do landscape design for homeowners and also take commercial customers if they call. I am willing to spend the money but I don't want to waste more money. What advertising actually works for businesses like mine?

What is a good proven successful method to advertise my design services?
1) A sound professional strategically designed and marketed website.

2) Ask owners if you can leave behind a sign in their yard for a limited time after you complete the project.

3)Pay per Click advertising on the internet, they are not evil if done correctly.

4)Direct Mail at targeted homes at specific times of year (when people are thinking about their yards)

There are several other methods depending on budget and the area your business is in. But yes, reduce your yellow page ad asap.

Reply:Hello. One of the most cost-effective and greatest reach of possible new prospects, is by using the Internet and its search engines, like Google, Yahoo, MSN and others, through a form of Internet marketing called search engine optimization (SEO). More and more people today are online, commercial customers as well. It is the best way to reach them, to get more people coming to you on their own without you having to seek them out by cold calling or using direct mail to reach them.

In a nutshell, SEO helps boost a website's keyword rankings across the major search engines...For example, your website could be found when a visitor types "landscaping design services" into Google's search box and your website appears on the first page out of millions of results...got it?

SEO allows your website to be found by visitors across the world (or even just across your city, if you only service one particular local area) by typing many keyword phrases (ie. houston landscaping design services) into a search engine's search box, and your website would be there. It is achieved thorugh a variety of methods, all of which require a monthly maintenance fee (which you are already used to paying, because you've done yellow page advertising). Achieving those high keyword rankings require a qualified SEO professional to continuously monitor your website and rankings, hence the monthly fees.

To find a qualified professional, simply look around the Web and search for one...ask a lot of questions too, to find exactly the company or professional you are looking for. Ask about their fees, how they will be performing these services for your company, if they use any kind of Pay Per Click or are they using natural/organic methods, ask to see sample ranking reports from other clients, testimonials, what professional business organizations they belong to (chamber of commerces or the BBB), etc. Unfortunately, there are many "black hat SEOs", those that practice unethical, or illegal SEO methods, which may get a website de-listed, de-ranked or possibly banned from search engines. Find professionals who practice "white hat SEO" services.
Reply:Search marketing can be effective for you, especially if you target your efforts geographically, which you can do with Google and Yahoo.

But I'd try some more locally focused tactics.

My cousin owns a very successful company like yours in Florida. He builds his business very effectively through referrals. Happy customes are willing (sometimes for an incentive) to give him names of friends and neighbors. Try an referral bonus to your existing customers.

There might be a showcase home in your area that you could approach with a 'total makeover' in exchange for their endorsement.

Or a municipal building or non-profit building that you could 'scape for the PR opportunities.

A business like yours really benefits from word of mouth. There are tons of ads and flyers floating around. But if my neighbor says to me, "try Joe the landscaper" I always do.

Good luck. You can do it.

How do i go about painting a design on my crappy old car? What type of paint could I use?

My car is going to die before I ever sell it, and I'm an art student, so I figured it would be fun to stencil a design on my hood. I'm not going to paint the whole car, just a small portion. Could I use spray paint meant for metal you get at home depot? Or would that instantly peel and chip? I know this has to be possible.

How do i go about painting a design on my crappy old car? What type of paint could I use?
Go see what left-over paints you can get from the car painting body shop.
Reply:well depending on what kind of art you study and how you learned would be a good way to start. to decide what kind of paint you want to use go to a hardware store and just tell them your story they will probably help you out
Reply:Well, any enamel will stick (Krylon, Rustoleum, etc.), but you need to at least scuff up the old paint first. You are an art student, get creative! Decopauge, stripe it, or something. I remember a carpet dealer who glued carpet samples and completely covered a VW bug once! Get some of your classmates brainstorm into an idea. Who knows, someone may want to buy it when you're done!

What type of degree do you need to become a design consultant at a home improvment store?

Like Lowe's or Home Depot. I have a knack for interior design but want to get my feet wet and make sure that's what I want to do before I jump into 4 years of design school. Any info would be great.

What type of degree do you need to become a design consultant at a home improvment store?
I think you just have to show your talent...in design you either go for being an ASID...which would take years and years plus a lot of dirty work..they are the best of the best...Lowe's and Home Depot can't even hire people with that education.....decorate several friends homes , take pictures and go for it.....I have no training and have decorated friends houses for over 30 years.....
Reply:Why not design about four rooms in color and ask to speak to the store manager. Show him what you have done and ask him what their requirements are. He may hire you on the spot
Reply:I'd guess architecture degree, because you have to know how to mount them. . Maybe even a certificate in Electricity, to power various combinations of lights.

And knowing someone helps, too.
Reply:if you want to work at lowes or home depot i think you need to be able to tie your shoes and find your butt with both hands
Reply:home economics with emphasis in interior design
Reply:I think it's more important to have impressive work history to get a consultant job. A school with a prestigious name will help, too probably.

What is the difference between interior design and professional home design?

i am interested in becoming an architect. i know what kind of architecture i want to be. but i dont know what its call. i just want to draw a single homes w/ rooms, bathroom, living room and ext from foundation up. what is it call? interior design or professional home design?

What is the difference between interior design and professional home design?
That is called an architect.

An interior designer is a licensed professional (as is architect) who is the type of person who helps out on the show trading spaces. They "design interiors." They will usually be knowledgeable in fabric, color, material, and geometric organization.

A professional home designer is usually a person who is not licensed or registered and draws up house plans. They call themself home designer because they are not licensed and not allowed to use architect.

An architect is a registered professional licensed to practice architecture and design buildings (including homes)
Reply:Interior design is strictly for the interior plans of the home, not the total home itself.

Why do evolutionist continue to say that Intelligent Design is NOT Science?

Intelligent Design DOES NOT NEED A "GOD CREATED" theme to stand on. It can stand on the scientific notion of Intelligent Design alone. There are far more pieces of evidence that Evolutionist do not point out because they clash with evolution. Evolutionist and palentologist have been caught planting and manipulating many pieces of evidence to support evolution, and then new pieces of bones crop up that dismiss the evidence of the evolutionist. Lucy has been suspected not to be of the Homosapiens leaniage, as is the Neanderthal man, and this is from within the Evolutionist circles.

Yet, Intelligent Design has evidence in such things as Corn (what most of the world knew as Maize). It also has evidence as can be obtained by current lab experimentation, which we call Genetic Engineering.

So with all this evidence debunking evolution and scientificaly supporting Intelligent Design. Why do the "scientists" who support evolution afraid of the academic competition?

Why do evolutionist continue to say that Intelligent Design is NOT Science?
Because a series of questions about another theory is not sufficient to make a new theory ... much less a *testable* theory.

Every single statement of evidence given by ID advocates is in the form of *disproving* evolution. Science doesn't work that way. You don't just tear down the existing theory, you have to propose something in its place that explains the same evidence. You have to provide a theory that explains every fact that evolution explains (a tall order), PLUS some facts that defy evolution.

You can say that the Designer is not the same as God ... but this Designer has to have Godlike powers to be able to implement its "designs." And it has to have existed for a Godlike eternity for it not to require a meta-designer of its own. And it must have Godlike intelligence (hence the 'I' in ID) to be able to design the very things you claim are too "irreducibly complex" to be the product of evolution. So if this Designer is not God, then what is it? In religion, you don't have to answer this question ... but in science you do.

What *is* your hypothesis? How did this Designer originate? What is it's mechanism for design? What is its mechanism for *implementing* (creating) its designs? And what, pray tell is its *motive*? (Motive is not an issue for evolution ... evolution has no motive, no goal ... but when you introduce the word "intelligence" into your hypothesis, then you burden yourself with the need for motive.) Note that these are not questions disproving the Designer. These are questions about what the Designer *IS*, how it works.

Until you can flesh out the details of your hypothesis, it is not falsifiable, not testable. It can explain every fact, therefore it explains nothing. A Designer with unknown properties, beginning, or motive is untouchable by any scientific experiment. That is why it is not science. It is the very definition of "supernatural" ... beyond nature.

So Intelligent Design isn't even a fully-baked *hypothesis* ... much less a hypothesis that can be tested ... much less a hypothesis that *has* been tested to become a *theory*.

That's why it is clearly NOT SCIENCE.

.
Reply:Very simply; it's not falsifiable.

What evidence could possibly show that there was no intelligent designer? None. Even if an unassailable physical mechanism for each and every modification to every species since the beginning of time were shown, all an ID proponent would have to do is say, "Well, that's how the Designer did it."

And that's why it's not a "scientific notion" at all.

By the way, google "Wedge Document" if you don't think ID has anything to do with creation by God.
Reply:The points you bring up do pose questions that do not seem to immediately conform with some current evolutionary ideas. In a broader sense evolution could still explain them. There really is nothing out there that I have seen which "proves" intelligent design. Just because a few discoveries are not readily explained by present ideas, doesn't mean that intelligent design is at work. In my opinion, the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming, clearly showing evolutionary development over time. You also bring up another good point. Evolution and intelligent design are simply scientific theories to explain things in the observed world, they are not meant to prove or disprove God. The problem with testing evolution is simply time. Evolution by definition is change over time. It is hard to create an experiment to span hundreds, or more accurately millions of years. Selective breeding and genetic engineering may be construed as a sort of survival of the fittest as easily as they fit with the idea of intelligent design. The intelligence that enables humans to engage in such tasks is itself a product of evolution.
Reply:They think they are an accident and I think so also for what it is worth.
Reply:That's sort of the point. Debunking (which no one has done, by the way) or taking random pot shots at evolution is not the same as proving Intelligent Design.

You prove a scientific hypothesis with test, measurement, and physical data. That has been done with evolution over, and over, and over. There are no serious scientists in the field who doubt it. They disagree sometimes on the path and mechanism in specific cases, but not the overall process. Intelligent Design, Creationism, 7 days to the Universe, Young Earth, whatever you wish to call it, at some point depends on Faith, not data.

That puts it in the realm of Philosophy or Theology, not Science. Keep your disciplines straight.

-----

Note: I always get a laugh out of the "irreducibly complex" line. There are trillions of paths evolution could have taken over the millenia. If we were sitting in the bottom of a methane ocean having this discussion telepathically, would our existence be any less complex and more probable? Out of all the possibilities that COULD have happened, we live in the one that did. That's just how it is.
Reply:I'm afraid Intelligent Design does not fit the defintion of science. Who formed a hypothesis? What was it? How was it tested? How was it confirmed or not confirmed.

However, Intelligent Design *is* appropriate for schools to teach in a science class. See my post at:
Reply:You seem to be well-informed about the "science" of ID (but you're woefully misguided concerning evolution). Perhaps you could provide a series of articles published in widely accepted, peer-reviewed science journals that establish ID as a viable scientific theory that stands by itself? That will give your argument some teeth - right now you're not saying very much.

I can give you 100 years of solid scientific literature that supports biological evolution. If you can't find some credible papers that support ID, then everything you say is wrong.
Reply:I'd like to know what you mean by "actively tested" in labs.

First, go see "Flock of Dodos" (www.flockofdodos.com).

Second, it's actually not a testable hypothesis. How do you prove that there is some greater intelligent force at work? It's like when early biologists believed in some sort of ether that filled the atmosphere and gave life to beings. They couldn't explain how life supposedly spontaneously arose because they didn't know about microorganisms yet. You can't theoretically prove that there's an intelligent goal using accepted scientific methods.

Maybe, in the future, we'll find a way that would allow science to prove such a force. In the meantime, however, we have to go by what has worked in the past. Plus, there are a lot of older scientists who are set in their ways and don't want to accept such a new theory. I think they get a lot more publicity than those scientists who tentatively accept intelligent design because they are more vocal and are in the majority. At this point, saying you believe in this idea might not be the best thing for your career.
Reply:Are there any experiments that you could think of that would DISPROVE intelligent design? Or would you believe it no matter what happened in experiments?

Scientific conclusions can be disproved if they are wrong. If I drop a stone and it falls UP, it would disprove gravity (oversimplified, but you get the idea). If ID can come up with a way to disprove if it is wrong, then it will be scientific. Until then, it is not.

FYI, there is a lot of seemingly unintelligent design in nature. Does that "prove" there is an unintelligent designer? Or, does evolution work one step at a time, modifying existing structures for new uses even thought the design does not work perfectly?
Reply:There is no academic competition. Most of the proponents of ID have neither qualifications nor learning in the area. In some cases their claims to academic achievement are false, and that even includes their supposed theological qualifications. Some are habitual liars. They are worse than the proponents of the Bermuda triangle drivel.

The fact that some fossil or other does not turn out to be exactly the thing that some newspaper might have said it was 30 years ago is neither here nor there. What the people who examined it might have said was probably somewhat different and their conclusions were probably more guarded than has been reported. You will only find what they actually said by reading the original scientific journal articles. These of course make no concession to the ignorant.

Evolutionists and paleontogists have been caught planting evidence? Oh yeah? I know of three cases, and if you are referring to the dear old Piltdown man as one I suggest you find out how the fraud (or just maybe practical joke) was exposed. No rantings from pulpits, no sermons from soapboxes and no tract handed out at a religious revival had anything to do with that. It was exposed by evolutionists, and if you check the story a bit deeper you will find that very few people outside Britain really took it seriously as a human fossil, and precious few inside Britain either. There were rumours of fraud as early as 1914. Most people who were qualified to have an opinion believed that it was at best a mistake.

The debunking of Piltdown was reported to British newspapers within a few days of it becoming certain. The museum even put on a special exhibition within a few weeks to show how the debunk was achieved.

Contrast this with the activities of some proponents of ID and creationism. At least two are proven liars who continue to spout their lies after they have been publicly corrected. In Australia their organisation was also close to financially fraudulent with multiple irregularities. I won't mention any names but they are well known.

These so called scientific creationism people have been hoaxed again and again. In 1986 a piece of wood from "Noah's Ark" that featured in a CBS TV presentation was revealed to come from a Californian tree unknown outside North America before 200 years ago. It was soaked in teriyaki sauce and baked in an oven to make it look old. Check out "George Jammal" on the net.

Intelligent design, creationism and creation science are a tissue of lies, misdirection, false argument and fraud.
Reply:The hypotheses coming from intelligent Design "scientist", irreducible complexity and specified complexity, have been thoroughly debunked. If these hypothesis could hold water, you would see dozens of scientists getting millions of $$$ in research money to further test and refine those hypothese to raise those hypotheses to theories.

On the other hand, Evolution Scientists can show many examples of evolution giving a mediocre or bad design to animals, such as rabbits, whose ancestors were carnivores, now have to eat their poo to get enough nutrition to survive. Not a very good design, but its good enough for rabbits to be in their niche and be quite successful. An intelligent designer would not have vestigal organs like an appendix in humans.

Evolution scientists would be happy to have a better theory on the origins and development of life if there was one to be developed. However, ID scientists are only interested in trying to fool people they are real scientists, their attempts to show real science have been pathetic failures. The only competition evolutionists have is for the truth.
Reply:All knowledge is math. to understand we must be able to compare measure and analyze data. We as human (product of god or not) believe that the math we have assigned to this data must be by design because it can be explained to a certain degree.

What we fail to realize is the data we are considering was created by us in our dimension of existence for us to understand.

We created the language to understand our surroundings and then point to that language as proof of design.

Special note.....God exists in everyone...

Will calico be a suitable material to iron on patchwork designs? Can I use oil crayons to design the picture?

I am a Year One teacher. Focus is on the olden days. Need a simple craft lesson. Thought the kids could design a patch using oil crayons, then I could iron this onto calico and sew into a patchwork quilt. Can you help? Will it work and will the calico be ok? Also the oil crayons. Will they work as an iron-on transfer type of thing? Any help would be appreciated.

Will calico be a suitable material to iron on patchwork designs? Can I use oil crayons to design the picture?
I have never heard of such a thing, although we did color on white fabric with regular crayons for a quilt project in our guild once.

We ironed our fabric (white or light color) onto freezer paper for stability, and then we traced designs out of coloring books using a fine point pigma pen. We then colored our designs with crayons and ironed paper towels over them to absorb the wax. We then peeled off the freezer paper and made our blocks into quilts.

A couple things we learned: white on white (where there was actually a type of paint making a print on the fabric) didn't absorb evenly, creating an interesting effect. This could either be to our advantage or disadvantage, depending on how we wanted the final overall look to end up. Also, sometimes we had to really iron several times to remove all the wax. The colors weren't always bright (they were soft and pretty), and we also had the option of outlining the color with an embroidery stem stitch.

Good luck if this is the route you want to go!
Reply:I think we use the term "calico" differently - in the US it generally means any 100% cotton fabric with a small print, or any fabric intended for quilting. You want to use a fabric that is 100% cotton, plain in color, and with a good weave. Cheap muslin is probably not the best choice as it tends to have a lot of slubs and is more loosely woven, but there are better quality muslins available. If you have access to Kona Cotton, that's probably your best bet. It is smooth, clear, substantial, and comes in many colors. You could use any of the dozen or so white or creams.

As for the actual design process, check out some of the links below for detailed info. I'd recommend writing directly on the fabric, then ironing to remove the wax. You can use regular crayons for this, or find special fabric crayons. Iron the fabric to some freezer paper to keep it flat and easy to draw on. If you prefer, you can do it as a transfer, but remind the kids that everything will be reversed when you iron it on. This means no words!
Reply:If the idea is "olden days", *why* would iron-on oil crayons be used? This confuses me, especially using it on calico.

By "calico", do you perhaps mean "muslin"? Calico is usually a printed cotton fabric. The default forms of muslin are plain white and off-white.

If you want the students to have sometime somewhat closer to olden days, iron butcher paper backing to plain muslin and cut into suitable-for-you squares or rectangles. Show the students how to sandwich a pattern behind and hold it against a window to trace the pattern to the cloth with plain pencil. Then hand-color with pencils, remove the butcher paper backing (modern, but makes the cloth much easier to handle) and assemble the top as desired.

It's *not* a quilt unless it's quilted. You can put in batting and tie or tack it to make a "comforter". You can just line and tack it as though it would be a "coverlet". Any of these three can become a wall-hanging.

The "simple craft lesson" is learning one way people copied patterns way back when. Another olden days method is to prick holes in a pattern with a pin and rub chalk or graphite or even cinnamon through the holes, then connect the dots with a pencil.

How can you design your own T-shirt and get multiple copies?

I have my own design. Where can I go to get them printed out onto t-shirts. Preferably the type of t-shirt designs that won't wash or come off in heavy wear or in the washing machine. How much could they generally cost?

How can you design your own T-shirt and get multiple copies?
you could take it to a local tshirt printing shop. I know we have several in the town I live in. However, there is probably a minimum number you have to make for them to do it for you, like 10-15 maybe? And the more you print the cheaper they would be. But you can probably expect them to range in price (per shirt) somewhere between $7-$15. Hope it turns out for you!

How much should I charge to design a banner?

I'm a fairly new artist but my work is very clean. I've been asked to design a banner and I'm not sure what to charge. I would research the other prices (search for high prices) then show the client my price compared to the higher prices.
Reply:i would think of it this way take in consideration of her small price banner..or even ask her...however put in consideration of the cost of the material and the hours you spent...think of it as an 8hour job...9dollars an hour...10dollars an hour...because i'm sure the more detailed the design the longer it will take...or take you friend's banner...see how many of her banners would create yours and times it by that...like 4 of her banners would make up the banner you are doing..so you would times 4 with her price of the banner

Is it possible to sublimate a design to a mug that is purely cooked clay w/o glaze?

Thanks to Willy for some answers. I know a bit of sublimation but I have not seen a design sublimated to a mug made of clay w/o glaze or to a clay tile w/o glaze. It is possible? Do I need to use some kind of coating spray like polymers?

Is it possible to sublimate a design to a mug that is purely cooked clay w/o glaze?
You can't use a mug to hold liquids unless it has a glaze which has been fired on in a kiln. It won't be waterproof, and also the glaze protects you from ingredients in the clay which might be harmful. I am guessing English is not your first language as I have never heard the word 'sublimation' used in connection with ceramics.

It doesn't give you specific box dimensions, but gives you best box size (in cubic feet or liters) for port tuning.

You must configure the box dimensions yourself as only you know where it's going and how it will fit.

Here is another useful place to go:

Elements would be things that carrots have when you look at them, like a tapered root, and green leaves coming from the top.

How should I start a portfolio for a Fashion Design college?

Im a sophmore in highschool, I was origanally going to be an artist, but once I hit middle school I got fashion fever. I sew well, and I consider myself origanal.

What are the steps I need to take to plan a portfolio? How many designs should I have ready to show? How many design boards should I have? Should I make an actual outfit/dress to bring in and show, or wear?

Thanks in advanced!

How should I start a portfolio for a Fashion Design college?
It varies by the school. This is coming from someone who actually majors in fashion design at one of the top 3 schools in the US for fashion Design and who applied to all 3 top schools in the US for fashion design..

The only top fashion design school that will want to see your fashion design work or sewing work will be Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. But even then they'll send you a home assignment and you can submit additional work for admissions. It is the cheapest Fashion school in the US, at a price tag of like $8000 for out of state students, and like 3K in state.

But in general schools like Parsons School of Design or Otis College of Art %26amp; Design(which are the other top 2 schools for fashion design in the US), will want to see a portfolio of your skills, which primarily will be of drawings of still life or life drawing. They don't want to see anything major specific(such as fashion) because you're applying to the Foundation year which is basically freshman year(not major specific)/ After your first year, you then declare your major and enter it. I personally thought I would dread foundation, but it really helps you decide and give you more time to think whether what you planned on majoring is really what you want. I know plenty of people who came to my school thinking they were going to do fashion but ended up realizing that they were just attracted to the idea of it, and ended up majoring in other fields.

I would just advice to take as many drawing classes(but not a must) or even a portfolio preparation class, and that's it. Don't take fashion classes or fashion illustration classes, because that's not what is required or asked for by these institutions.

If you're serious about a career in fashion design the ONLY places you should be considering applying or going to is either

Parsons http://www.parsons.edu

Otis http://www.otis.edu

FIT http://www.fitnyc.edu

Back ups who have strong fashion design programs but are not as great as the schools above are

Pratt Institute http://www.pratt.edu

Savannah College of Art %26amp; Design http://www.scad.edu

Rhode Island College of Art %26amp; Design http://www.risd.edu

BTW regardless of what people say, FIDM in Cali, is not a good school, it is also not related to FIT which is a good school.

Just check the admissions requirements of the schools listed above on their websites and you'll see what the portfolio requirements are. Savannah College of ARt %26amp; Design is the only school that doesn't require a portfolio. It's optional.

A community college that is strong in los angeles which also has a fashion program is Los Angeles Trade Tech at www.lattc.edu They are a really cheap option for someone on a budget, and still reputable.
Reply:I think you may want to get in touch with a college that has fashion design to better understand how you should start building your portfolio. They'll probably want to see sketches and pictures of live models wearing your clothing. By talking to a school you'll be able to get all the details so ask a lot of in depth questions to help you now. You could also go to collegeboard.com (type in fashion design) to get a better understanding of what fashion design really calls for. Good luck :)

How would you design a school dance?

I just want to know how people would design their own school dance. If the students were in charge of the designing with no argument of the teachers and staff.

How would you design a school dance?
play good new music like "sweet escape" and good old music like, well, stuff i know people like.have a live band perform and a DJ for other songs. have cool lights fluring everywhere. have a banner, streamers. good refreshments.
Reply:It only matters the amount of students who attend and their taste as well as if they all agree on the style. what dances you will teach like i attenend dance school since I was 2, i am now twelve. each studio is used for a different type of dance, like tap, jazz, ballet and even hip-hop(graffiti)
Reply:I would get a friend...see what she and you like, and what the school would like. But banners, streamers, slow music, rock/pop music (like Girlfriend by Avril and Kelly C ones etc.) Also put up balloons, I am thinking of more ideas and will edit them later. OK-KIE-DOK-KIE!!!
Reply:If the teachers had NO SAY in it at all, I would still design it the same way:

just so everyone has a good time.
Reply:There are many different ways to run a dance studio and something different may work for you as me. The most successful studios that I do business with are run by the director with limited input by students on things like costuming.
Reply:I have lots of experience with this. Get students who have good grades and have them plan and decorate. Put them each in separate committees: food, decorations, drinks, and music. For music they could hire a DJ or get a student/teacher to be one. Also, for decorations, make them go with a theme, like Luau or Summer. Good luck with your dance!

What is the best way to design a tattoo sleeve?

Want to design a tattoo sleeve but have trouble finding ways that would incorporate everything.

What is the best way to design a tattoo sleeve?
Take your ideas into the tattoo parlor and let the artist there handle that part. He'll just call you up when its ready. Its the best way. Good luck man.
Reply:Ya have a quality tattoo guy design it. Give him the idea you are interested in.

I think Japanese style are the best. And defintely the best for sleeves. The design looks better and doesn't jumble together.

ID watch miami ink a bit and check out Garver and Ami's stuff in particular.
Reply:Take your ideas to an artist for a consult. That's what they do for a living, so they will be able to make a creative design without compromising composition.

How can i transfer my tattoo design to my skin?

I have a design i want to test out. I have tracing paper but i need to know what the professionals use to transfer a tattoo?

How can i transfer my tattoo design to my skin?
you can actually use just stick deodorant. make the design on the carbon paper, rub the deodorant (has to be a solid, and clearish...not the white kind) onto your skin and immediately place the carbon paper on the spot. leave it there for a few seconds while you gently rub it. kind of like putting on a temporary tattoo. if you dont use that kind of deodorant, another thing that works is to put a solution of soap and water (about 50/50) in a squirt bottle and spray that on instead of the deodorant. they both work really well. and incase you dont like it, rubbing alcohol will take it all off :)
Reply:Clear stick deodorant will work. Print it out or photocopy it

then press on to deodorant covered skin..
Reply:Good Idea. Glad you're taking some time and thought...

We use carbon paper. Layers of thin paper with a carbon sheet underneath, and you put the design inbetween the sheet, above the carbon, and then run it through a thermofax...which uses heat and pressure to transfer the design.

I doubt that you can get either of those things... Sorry.. We order ours from a supply company..and I'm not sure where to get it outside of them...

We also use green soap and/or a deodorant stick to actually prepare the skin for the design to be applied. You could try using an ink pen, and deodorant on the skin where you want it, and see if that transfers...but I'm not used to the home-ways of it..

Maybe you have a friend that could draw it out on you..?
Reply:you could scan it and print it out using this paper http://www.beldecal.com/tattoo_paper.cfm

What's the difference between graphic design and web developing?

I need to know this because I want to persue a career in freelance web design. When finding clients, do you keep your clients permanently (if they like your work) or is it all part-time or shirt-term? Are there any people with experience who can help?

What's the difference between graphic design and web developing?
Graphic design is making graphics in general and is not limited to computers....graphic design entails marketing in the real world, advertisements, etc.

Web development is, of course, programming websites for different clients.

A large company may hire you to be a full time webmaster....meaning you work at updating their own webpage constantly....some webmasters are freelance and can either be hired to do a one time web design for a person or company, or may be hired to make periodic updates.

Freelance web designers generally have several clients at once and work at home or their own office.

If you are a full time webmaster for a company you will generally work at the office of the company, such as the headquarters, and your main focus is solely to update and maintain their company website. (of course on the side in your free time you can have part time clients!)

Hope this helps :)
Reply:Graphic design and web development holds hands.

Graphic design spans a wide range of media and can be sub-dived into several disciplines, web designer, art directors, press designers, above the line below, the line... you name it.

A web developer is the technical computer monkey stitching codes together and solving problems with infinite probability's.

(A Graphic Designer is the creative fairy capable of anything with the right experience)

I would suggest getting the basics of Graphic Designing under your knee and then trying to climb the development Everest.

The secret to great websites is not only easily navigated user interfaces but also a strong idea, and appropriate graphics.

(Something lots of web developers neglect to include.)
Reply:A Web Developer does coding dealing with programming languages and a Graphic designers deal with more graphics, adobe photoshop, programs like that...

Thanks

How do I enlarge a small design onto a wall to make a mural?

I've found a design that I would like to make into a mural on one of my bedroom walls (unsure of actual size but it's not a very large wall) however I don't know how to enlarge the image to put it on the wall. I'm a hopeless drawer so doing it by hand won't work. I'd appreciate any suggestions!

How do I enlarge a small design onto a wall to make a mural?
The easiest way to do this is to use a projector. If you don't own one, and you can't find someone who has one they can lend to you, you can rent one for a couple of days at a minimal cost. The other option is to bring the image to a copy shop and explain to them what you are trying to do. They should be able to enlarge at least up to 36"X48", and they can enlarge it in sections so that you will have multiple "panels" of that size to accommodate your wall size. Then you would just have to make sure you are putting the right piece in the right place then trace/transfer it onto your wall. Good luck!
Reply:Do you know anyone with a projector that you can hook up to your computer? Just project it onto you wall, then you can trace. Super easy. They are expensive to buy but you probably can rent one.
Reply:use an overhead projector......copy the image onto the clear overhead sheets..... it is great because you just trace the image!!
Reply:transfer the picture onto a transparency and then use an overhead projector to 'blow it up' onto the wall .... then trace and paint
Reply:Make grid lines on the original image. Make grid lines on the wall proportionate to the original.

Example:

Original grid = 1/2" squares

Wall grid (depending on wall size) = 1' squares (use chalk line to snap straight lines, available at building supply stores)

Transfer image block by block.
Reply:Do you have a place in town where you can rent a projector? I think that would work well.
Reply:Have it made into a transparency and project it onto the wall with a (rented) overhead projector. You can adjust the size of the projected image. Then trace the image. I saw this done on HGTV. Very cool.
Reply:With a projector like in schools. You can borrow them from most libraries. I muraled a wall like that, it made it so much easier.
Reply:The best and easiest way to reproduce your design on your wall (especially if you have no drawing talent, as you say) is to use a projector. If you can't rent one at your local library or craft center, then you can buy one. Contrary to what some people are telling you here, you can get inexpensive ones nowadays. Oh sure, there are some very expensive ones that are used for graphic arts, but if all you want to do is put this on your wall, then check out this link that shows you a projector you can buy at Omer DeSerres art stores:

http://www.omerdeserres.com/

They are very reasonably priced and will do the job. And if you are worried about being stuck with the projector after, I guarantee if you place an ad in the paper or on an art school bulletin board, you'll easily find a taker...

Enjoy your new wall!

How do I design and create my own VERY plus sized patterns for clothes?

I want certain clothes but they're not in my size. I want to design my own clothes, make the patterns for them, sew them together and eventually end up wearing the clothes I designed. How do I do all this, what do I need, and are there any step by step books for the beginner?

Serious answers only please.

How do I design and create my own VERY plus sized patterns for clothes?
You'll need to learn a trade - pattern making. It's something you can learn by deconstructing pieces of clothing you currently own, or by working with someone who is already a pattern maker. You can also go to school to learn how to do it - I recommend doing that because you'll learn the latest techniques and learn the lingo that is used in the fashion industry. That might help you down the line if you decide to market your designs.

Good luck!
Reply:A good way to start is by finding oversized mens t-shirts and learning how to sew them so that they are fitted or whatever style you prefer. It's very easy, and I'll add a link in just a second.

A tape measure (the kind that looks like a long rope) is very helpful! just apply your measurements to whatever patterns you find. Also, it's a good idea to start with patterns you can adjust then by making patterns the first time you start.

www.craftster.org has great and helpful people and tutorials on the sewing forum.

Hope I helped!
Reply:I don't know how but I know there is a book on the subject. Good Luck!

Where can I find a flock design stencil for painting on the walls?

Theres no way I could EVER free hand draw that , I guess you would call it flock design, looks kind of french or something.

But is there a way to make/buy a stencil to just hold on the wall and paint over??

There has to be some way!

Where can I find a flock design stencil for painting on the walls?
did you mean Fleur de Lis ....

Reply:Just trace the design onto mylar. It is what stencils are made of. All the craft store sell it. Then cut out with an Xacto knife. In a pinch I've used manila folders, but they get messy.
Reply:Yes there is. Search around on ebay.com in the crafts area and you will find what you need.
Reply:Making your own stencils can be very easy. Find a pattern you like, and print off a copy with your computer, then cut it out with an exacto knife, and finally laminate it with clear plastic (self laminating sheets or contact paper) and cut out again, so the plastic is outside the paper. Or use a thin, semi rigid, plastic and carbon paper to trace directly what you need to cut out.

HGTV.com has multiple suggestions on how to do this, and probably has patterns too. Decorating Cents has often had the guest designers making their own stencils.
