What is the role of Chemistry in the design of pesticides combining max efficiency with min enviro damage?

Sorry about the shortening of words... I couldn't fit it in. Te question is written properly below for clarification:

What is the role of Chemistry in the design of pesticides that combinine maximum efficiency with minimum environmental damage?

What is the role of Chemistry in the design of pesticides combining max efficiency with min enviro damage?
Pesticides are any of a variety of compounds toxic to insects to protect crops. The roll of chemistry on the design of pestidcides is to ensure that only the insect is killed and there is the minimum amount of 'collateral damage' of other animals and plants. This can be done by altering the chemical structure of the compound to make it specific to insects or to ensure that it doesn't travel up the food chain to larger animals and ultimately, us.
