Best way to design and find someone to make a custom ring setting?

I'm trying to get an engagement ring setting made that I've designed myself. The only problem, is I hardly know what to do! Anything like how to properly design an idea, who to find, or any other advice? I know what kind of metal and to find a loose stone.

Please only persons who know something, no basic, obvious advice (such as search). Thank you!

Nothing wrong in doing your own design. All my wife's rings are custom designed.

All you need to do is visit your local jeweller and ask for the telephone number of a independent manufacturer that will manufacture for you. As easy as that.

It helps if you have the stone and a drawing of what you want. The drawing must show detail, not the idea as this allows interpretation. So draw big.

You pay extra if the designer / manufacturer has to do the artwork.

Be as concise as possible but it helps that you number your features and list these with description on a separate page.

If a feature is a leaf and is the main feature number as 1 then describe its look.

i.e. It may be a Maple leaf that is twisted to the left and mounted on clasps one, two, and three with its stem mounted 1/4 inch from clasp base.

Hope this helps
Reply:Many local jewelers will do custom design work... I'd probably find one who sells popular reputable name brands (like Tacori and Rolex) so you know that they have a reputation with high quality. Bring in a drawing or concept when you meet with them. They might also do extra drawings of the design for you or do a CAD mock-up of it on a computer. Then they will make a wax model which you should get to see so that you can actually see the size and details and ask them to make any changes. Then they will make the ring. Hope this helps... btw Whiteflash.com does custom work and have heard nothing but positive things about their service and quality. You might want to check them out!
Reply:The jewelers to the extraordinarily wealthy will be able to take your design make it. In other words go to the artsy jewelry store on the side of town with the huge houses :) They will have the loose stones and will try to make the ring perfect. Sometimes there will be large diamond brokers who also offer design assistance. Stay away from any kind of a chain or the tiny mom and pop places that sell imported trinket type jewelry. You need need a professional jeweler that views himself to be an artist and the only way to find that is asking around. If you see someone with unusual jewelry, ask where they got it and if they can refer you to someone.
